The Coolangatta Surf Club development included a significant extension of the first floor dining facilities, including new commercial kitchen and bar facilities. The approach was to create a singular form over the existing building that had been added to over many decades since it was first built in the seventies. The simple form has cladding that referenced the local beach cottages. Acoustic ceiling panels were designed to reference the famous beach umbrellas of Coolangatta Beach in the 60s. The dining area has carpet that reflected the beach sand and an open plan dining was reminiscent of sitting on the beach. There was some cost management that reduced the design intent of various elements.
